How to Get a Police Certificate – The Netherlands

Do I need to provide a Police Certificate with my Application for Permanent Residence? No. Citizenship and Immigration Canada will send you a letter requesting a police certificate after you send your Application for Permanent Residence. You must provide that letter when you apply for a Police Certificate.

If you are registered in the Municipal Records Database (BRP), you should apply at the Population Affairs Department (Burgerzaken/Publiekszaken) of your municipality or you can appoint a representative to apply on your behalf to the Population Affairs Department of the municipality where you are registered in the BRP.

If you are not registered in the BRP, you should apply directly to the Ministry of Justice (Justis) by emailing your application, documents and payment details to vog.np.rni@minvenj.nl

If you live outside of The Netherlands:

If you are still registered in the Municipal Records Database (BRP), you can appoint a representative to apply on your behalf to the Population Affairs Department (Burgerzaken/Publiekszaken) of your former municipality.

Information and documents you need:

  • The official letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada requesting a police certificate. You can print/scan a copy of this page along with information from either the application kit or any email communication you received from a Canadian Mission requesting this police certificate.
  • Completed application form (available in English and Dutch)
  • A valid passport
  • Applicable fees

Special notes and considerations

Do I need to provide a Police Certificate for Express Entry?

Yes, but only after you submit your application. When you apply for permanent residence, you will be asked to upload a police certificate. Instead, you must upload a document that states: “I am applying from a country that requires an official request letter from IRCC to get a police certificate.”

We will then review your application. If it is otherwise complete, we will send you more information on how to get a police certificate. Please read the instructions above for more information.

We will not accept police certificates sent by mail for Express Entry applications.

The Certificate of Good Conduct is issued in Dutch with a portion translated in English at the bottom. It is not necessary to have it translated.

Please note that Ministry of Justice may refuse to issue you a Certificate of Good Conduct if you have a criminal record. In this case, you should write to the Central Criminal Records Office (Justitiële Informadienst, Postbus 227, 7600 AH Almelo) to obtain a copy of your criminal record which will require a translation in English or French.
