How to get a Police Certificate:

If you are a citizen of Ireland:

If you live in Ireland:

You should apply in person at your local police station (Garda Síochána). Contact information is available on the Irish National Police Service website.

You may also nominate a representative apply on your behalf, however he/she must present a witnessed statement indicating your consent to the release of information.

If you live outside of Ireland:

You must apply by mail to the superintendent who is in charge of the district where you lived. Contact information is available on the Irish National Police Service website.

Information and documents you need:

  • A copy of your identification (eg. Passport or driver’s licence)
  • Your full name
  • Your date and place of birth
  • Your current and all previous Irish addresses
  • The purpose of the request (e.g. for immigration purposes)
  • A stamped, self-addressed envelope
  • Applicable fees

Special notes and considerations

Do I need to provide a police certificate for Express Entry?

Yes. If you are Invited to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence, you need to upload a police certificate in your Electronic Application for Permanent Residence (e-APR). Please follow the instructions above to get your police certificate.

We will not accept police certificates sent by mail for Express Entry applications.

There is no centralized police computer serving county superintendent offices and each county's Garda Síochána office will issue their own certificates.

Once completed, your police certificate will be mailed directly to you.
