How to get a Police Certificate:

If you are a citizen of Iceland:

If you live in Iceland:

You should apply in person at the District Commissioner (Syslumadur) in the municipality where you live (see Special notes and considerations for complete address).

If you live outside of Iceland:

You must give written authority (signed by two witnesses) to a representative in Iceland to request the certificate on your behalf by fax or by email as a PDF attachment to the District Commissioner (Syslumadur) in the municipality where you lived (see Special notes and considerations for complete address).

If you are not a citizen of Iceland:

If you live in Iceland:

Certificates are available to everyone over the age of 18 who has an Icelandic identification number. You should apply at the District Commissioner (Syslumadur) in the municipality where you live.

If you are under the age of 18, you may apply at any Syslumaður, except Skógarhlíð 6. Written permission from a parent or a guardian is required.

If you do not have an Icelandic identification number or Kennitala, contact the District Magistrate for instructions.

If you live outside of Iceland:

Certificates are available to everyone over the age of 18 who has an Icelandic identification number. You should apply at the District Commissioner (Syslumadur) in the municipality where you lived.

Information and documents you need:

  • Driver’s licence or passport
  • If a representative is applying on your behalf, complete the Umboð PDF authority form (PDF, 43.73 KB) available on the Syslumadur website (available in Icelandic only)
  • Applicable fees (To be paid at the Syslumadur. If you are applying from far away, please contact the Syslumadur for alternate payment arrangements).

Special notes and considerations

Do I need to provide a police certificate for Express Entry?

Yes. If you are Invited to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence, you need to upload a police certificate in your Electronic Application for Permanent Residence (e-APR). Please follow the instructions above to get your police certificate.

We will not accept police certificates sent by mail for Express Entry applications.

Office locations are available on the Syslumadur website (available in Icelandic only), through the embaetti page (available in Icelandic only) or on the Multiculturaland Information Center website using the “My Municipality” function. You can apply at any Syslumadur location, except at the Skogarhlid location.

Your certificate can be issued in Icelandic, English or Danish, as long as you do not have any sentences or penalties. If your certificate is requested in a language other than Icelandic and you do not have a clear record, you must have your certificate translated by a certified translator.
